Thailand's Sam Chuk Community and Old Market District along the Tha Cheen River not far from Bangkok,
northwest of the Thai capital in Suphan Buri province—is a bit of Old China in once rural Siam. Witness to a
disappeared way of life, the distinctive river and canal-side community was recently granted an Award of
Merit in the 2009 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Asia-Pacific
Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.

Realising the changes taking place, local residents formed a SamChuk Market Conservation
Committee. Rather than pulling down the old buildings, they organised to preserve what they
received from their ancestors and restored 19 local buildings, adapting the old style architecture
described in Thai as Khanompang Khing (ginger bread) style, into a contemporary market,
welcoming to traditionalists and those with new style taste as well.Sam chuk community has an
attractive old market because all merchants have a friendly to invite and service travelers to visit
there and they inform the history of Samchuk. There are many sightseeing at samchuk 100 years old
market that you should not miss to visit and
take some photos.

The City Pillar Shrine, the heart of Suphan Buri town, was once a Thai-style wooden shrine housing stone statues of the gods Shiva and Vishnu. Following renovations, however, the shrine was rebuilt as an edifice in the Chinese style, housing a Mahayana Buddhist bas relief of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, also called the four-handed God Vishnu, who is much worshipped by both Thais and Chinese. On the full moon day of the 7th Chinese lunar month, the shrine, with support from the Chinese Association, holds a huge alms-offering ceremony for the poor. This Mahayana Buddhist festival always attracts thousands of participants.

This ancient royal temple, believed to have been built some 800 years ago when Suphan Buri
was a prosperous community, bears the emblem of King Rama IV on its gable. A huge seated Buddha image
named “Luang Pho To", 23 meters in height, is enshrined in the main chapel. Semi-annual festivals are
held in April and November for locals to pay their respects to the image.
In addition, a traditional Thai-style house known as Khum Khun Chang can be enjoyed. The house’s
construction and design carefully follow descriptions in a piece of classic literature, “Khun Chang-Khun Phaen”
, which was penned by the early BANGKOK era’s most beloved Thai poet, Sunthon Phu.
